1.Vehicle
 Description

Details:  Using one passenger vehicle (car or truck), place the required number of hides based on the level.  All hide placements must be in the specific location based on the level.  All wheel hides must be placed either behind a spoke on the hubcap or on the front of the brake rotor.

Time limit: 2 minutes 

Preferred off-leash but may be run on leash with no assistance from the handler.

 Judging

Judging:  The dogs should show competency at locating multiple hides in a search area without handler assistance. The dog should be able to locate all the hides with minimal return to already found hides. The video should show the dog clearly demonstrating behavior changes or communication behavior to indicate that they have located the hides. The handler may move in support of the dog’s behavior/movement but should not lead the dog to new or productive areas. 

Any excessive pawing of the vehicle will result in a non-pass.

 Level 1 (10 points)

Level 1:  Two hides  (Pick one of the 3 options below);

  1. Front wheel and rear wheel of vehicle (wheel hides must be on same side of vehicle)
  2. Front wheel and license plate/grill of vehicle
  3. Rear wheel and rear bumper/hitch of vehicle

Level 2:  Three hides.

  1. Front license plate/grill or tow hitch/rear bumper 
  2. Front wheel of vehicle
  3. Rear wheel of vehicle (wheel hides must be on same side of vehicle)

Level 3:  Three hides.  

  1. Front license plate/grill or tow hitch/rear bumper
  2. One wheel (wheel hide and door seam hide must be on same side of vehicle)
  3. One hide inside of door seam or under the running board but not stuck to the side of the car. (If you put the hide inside the door seam, we recommend it is outside of the rubber weather sealing strip)  Please Note:  Some running boards will go in when vehicle is not running.  If doing a running board hide, the running board should be out and the hide underneath it.

2.Blank Area
 Description

Details:  Set a blank search area (Interior or Exterior).  If using an empty area (such as a training building or empty exterior)  there must be at least 15 objects in the search area.  Boxes/Containers/Luggage (paint cans, plastic containers, cardboard boxes of any kind) should not be used in the number of objects.  We recommend you select the size of your search area to be appropriate given the time limits - larger may be better in many cases.  If you have a smaller space, it is acceptable for the dog to cover the area multiple times to reach the time limit.  

The handler may move with the dog in order to facilitate actively covering the entire search area the required minimum of one time.

 Judging

Judging:  The team must actively search the area for the specified time limit.  The team should thoroughly cover the entire area a minimum of once.  The video should show the dog does not demonstrate communication behavior to indicate that they have located a hide during the time required. The dog should not disengage from searching (i.e. for 5 seconds or more) more than twice during the search. The handler may cue the dog to resume searching once during the search.

3.High/Low
 Description

Details:  Set two hides the required distance apart at the height levels designated for each level.  Hides should not be in any type of container (paint cans, plastic containers, cardboard boxes of any kind).

Level 1:   Hides should be a maximum of 10 feet apart horizontally.

  • Hide #1 set at least one foot off ground
  • Hide #2 set at least four feet off the ground on a wall or object.

Level 2:  Hides should be a maximum of 7 feet apart horizontally..   

  • Hide #1 set at two feet off the ground
  • Hide #2 set at six feet off of the ground on a wall or object

4.Inaccessible
 Description

Details:  An inaccessible hide in this challenge is defined as a hide that the dog cannot physically access. Depth of the hide for all levels should be a minimum of 18 inches in all directions and recommended no more than 3 feet. The height of the hide is recommended to be below 3 feet. This inaccessible challenge excludes contained type hides like hides inside drawers, cupboards or file cabinets. The dog must clearly demonstrate that he understands the location of the hide.

 Judging

Judging:  The dog should show competency at locating the hide without handler assistance.  The video should show behavior changes or communication behaviors to indicate the dog has located the hide without going directly to source.

 Level 1 (10 points)

Level 1:  Create an inaccessible hide in the middle of an area. The dog should be able to get all the way around the hide (360 degrees). You can use a combination of x-pens, crates, chairs, tables, or other objects to create the barrier around the hide. The tables and chairs may be upright or on their sides. The dog should not be able to easily squeeze through or jump over the barrier.

 Level 2 (20 points)

Level 2:  Create an inaccessible hide along a wall. The dog will have access to 180 degrees around the hide. You can use a combination of x-pens, crates, chairs, tables, or other objects to create the barrier around the hide. The tables and chairs may be upright or on their sides. The dog should not be able to easily squeeze through or jump over the barrier.

Level 2 Video examples:

 Level 3 (30 points)

Level 3:  Set an inaccessible hide using a large, physically immovable object/barrier that already exists in the environment. The hide should be under or behind the object/barrier. Examples might include behind a credenza or a buffet, at the back of shelves that are filled with stuff, under a large table with chairs pushed tightly in the whole way around the table. Hides may be behind or under a cabinet, but not inside the cabinet. For safety reasons, please do not use vehicles for this search.
